Holiday Storage That Is Easy to Reopen Next Year

Holiday storage usually happens when everyone is tired and ready to move on. That is why boxes get filled quickly and become frustrating next year. A better system packs for reopening, not just for putting away.
Pack by next year's use
Group items by how they will come out:
- first decorations
- tree or main display
- table items
- wrapping supplies
- lights and cords
- keepsakes
This is more useful than packing only by room if the rooms change each year.
Remove broken or unused items now
Do not store broken lights, crushed decor, empty packaging, or items nobody used this year. If you already know you will not want it next season, do not give it another year of storage space.
Label the first-open box
Create one box that should be opened first next year. It might include hooks, timers, extension cords, basic decor, or the items that set up the rest of the season.
This prevents opening every box just to find the starting pieces.
Store wrapping supplies together
Wrapping paper, tape, tags, ribbon, bags, and tissue should be one category. If these supplies scatter, people buy duplicates because they cannot find what is already owned.
Add a short note
Before storing everything, write a note for next year: what ran out, what was not used, what needs repair, and where the first-open box is. A small note can save a lot of searching later.
